Believe you’re picking a healthier option when you go for diet soda rather than a sugary beverage? Well, guess again.  This may be self-defeating behavior.

Diet soda may well have fewer calories but it can have a huge weight on your belly fat. This is according to two studies reported in an assembly of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

Researchers at San Antonio Texas Health Science Center surveyed 474 people, all 65 to 74 years old, for nearly a decade, measuring the subjects’ height, weight, waist circumference, and diet soda intake every 9.5 years. Diet soft drink (soda) consumers, as a group, suffered 70 percent larger increases in belly fat compared with non-users. Regular users, who said they drank two or more diet sodas a day, felt
belly fat increases that were 500 percent bigger than those of non-users.
